The boycott of Israel isn't about left versus right, or about world opinion. It's about the symbolism of Israel being a Western country backed by the US in the Middle East. Arafat convinced people that Palestine was the symbol of the oppressed third world; at the same time, American hawks began supporting Israel (and not other US allies, like Egypt) as a way of distancing themselves from traditional right-wing anti-Semitism.
